Ted Hammond lives in Plattsford, Nebraska. Only nine children attend school in Plattsford: four fourth graders, four eighth graders, and one sixth grader. Since Ted is the only sixth grader, he has free time to do his favorite thing: read mystery novels. When Ted sees a face in a deserted farmhouse, he decides to solve the mystery. He eventually meets April, her mom, Alexa, and her brother, Artie. The family is on the run after April's father died serving overseas, and a friend of their father wanted to move in with Alexa. Ted watns to do everything he can to help them to safety. Can one sixth-grader's attempts to save a struggling family be exactly what is needed to save the struggling town?
